Breathing Fire | Rebecca K. Lilley

16095720
Sometimes a head start has a price...

Jillian and her sister have been on the run for longer than either will ever admit to (a lady never tells her age) but sometimes even the most dedicated fugitives have to stop running, and start fighting.

I was already having the day from hell when two angry druids stormed into my shop. Druids in my shop was bad. Very bad. Their presence in my place of business
was a disaster no matter how you looked at it, but the fact that I knew these two druids in particular was an outright catastrophe. The fact that they happened to hate my guts certainly wasn't going to help matters, though it was hardly surprising. Even druids who didn't know me cursed at the sound of my name...

Paranormal romance

After spending over 2,000 years being a lost soul looking for the angel I was forbidden to fall in love with, I finally found him. Lucky for me he has taken up residence inside the hot body of NYC’s local bad boy, tattooed rock star, Shane Maxton. Turns out, not only is he absolutely perfect, so is the whole Grace Taylor life that I’m stuck in. The only problem is Gabriel. An archangel who wants me all to himself so he kind of kidnaps me. Now I have to find my way back and hope everything works out…

Just a word of warning if you haven’t read the first book, Fall From Grace there are some spoilers in this review.

Saving Grace had a lot of potential but it fell short. Basically, Gabriel was leading a group of fallen angels and wanted Selah or Grace to create Nephilim. The Nephilim are offspring of angels and humans. They’re savage beings that only destroy. Why do you ask would Gabriel want Nephilim? Well he only wants to take over the world.

After the attack Grace was in a coma for a month, while her soul was trapped by Gabriel. Shamsiel saves her and ends her punishment after making a deal with Michael and leaves her. She awakens from the coma with her soul finally able to move on as this would be her last life. However, she must live it without Shamsiel.

The relationship between Shane and Grace continues, but it seems to be at a standstill for the majority of the book. In Fall From Grace there was sizzling chemistry, witty one liners and a good plot in the works. This second book has much of the same except the plot. It takes the entire book for the relationship to mature. I assumed that with Grace being attacked, nearly dying, and in a coma would push Shane into handcuffing Grace to his side. Sadly it’s the same thing over and over again. Shane was with a girl, Grace gets jealous, Grace was with a boy, Shane was aggressively jealous.  Then there’s Gabriel popping up randomly and saying “give yourself to me” and Grace yells “never!” This happens too many times throughout.

There wasn’t much plot and that’s the downfall for me. Both books are heavy with romance with a subtle fantasy twist. The main being fallen angels and the not so fallen and of course Grace’s lost soul. It does end on a happy note, but it took far too long to reach it and with little substance. Even with all of my problems with the book I still wanted to know what happened in the end with both Grace and Shane. My personal opinion is that these two books should have been condensed into one book.

Adult, paranormal romance

For fans of the Oracle of Delphi series...and for those who aren't...

Born into one of the wealthiest families in Ireland, Siobhan Law has status, privilege, and a secret: The Greek gods of Olympus and their kingdom in the clouds are real, and her family acts as one of their agents on Earth.

When the beautiful immortal celeste Liam Argyros shows up claiming to have come to Earth to deal in the affairs of the divine, Siobhan finds herself unable to resist his charms. New to the game of passion and seduction, she quickly ends up in over her head, sinking deeper with every attempt Liam makes to win her over.

But Liam’s divine mission is far more complex than she ever imagined and nothing is truly as it seems. Because Liam has a secret of his own: He is Apollo, Olympian god of the Sun, and his mission will never be complete until he has claimed Siobhan’s heart forever.

I liked the setting, romance and the mythology premise of the story. I also enjoyed the mystery aspect and trying to figure what the gods had in store for Siobhan. The strong writing pulled me in and I wanted to know what happened, even though I didn’t like the two main characters.

Siobhan Law is part of the Family of Influence, agents of the Olympians that control Earth. There are twelve families, two for each continent and they execute the agenda of the gods. Immortal celestes are mortals that were “turned by gods to pay homage and keep the divine.” I didn’t like Siobhan’s character. To put it simply she was unremarkable. The constant I love him and trust him, but he lied to me multiple times, yet I’m going to continue the relationship was driving me insane. It seemed like as the story progressed she didn’t learn and I couldn’t care less.

Liam Argyros has perfect looks, perfect body and plays the violin perfectly. Siobhan had his number at first glance, an immortal. She was just wrong at what kind. To be honest I wish the book blurb didn’t mention that Liam was Apollo. Yes, I knew something was up with his character but I wouldn’t have known exactly who he was. Also, I honestly think that a god can seduce a woman better, but apparently him wanting to be **** deep was as good as got at least for the first half of the book. Later on his declarations of love just didn’t ring true. I didn’t like him, but then again he’s Apollo, a god, and his decisions weren’t justified.

I was disappointed with the lack of answers that we got, not necessarily a cliff hanger, but everything is not solved in this book. It's probably my impatience talking. It seems like Siobhan’s story is done and we will see a new heroine in the second book. I did like the story, but I feel like it should have been longer to give it more depth.

The romance is quite central in this book, so if this is not your cup of tea then I do recommend N.K. Jemisin’s phenomenal Inheritance trilogy. This is also a fantasy book with a little romance and the plot focuses on god-like beings as well.
