Sometimes a head start has a price...
Jillian and her sister have been on the run for longer than either will ever admit to (a lady never tells her age) but sometimes even the most dedicated fugitives have to stop running, and start fighting.
I was already having the day from hell when two angry druids stormed into my shop. Druids in my shop was bad. Very bad. Their presence in my place of business was a disaster no matter how you looked at it, but the fact that I knew these two druids in particular was an outright catastrophe. The fact that they happened to hate my guts certainly wasn't going to help matters, though it was hardly surprising. Even druids who didn't know me cursed at the sound of my name...

Here’s another book that was in a forgotten plane of my
kindle land. No joke. I have had this for over a year. When I started this
book, I thought the second one was already out considering it’s been over two
years since the release of Breathing Fire.
Boy was I wrong. So here I am pining away for the second instalment.
I’ve noticed that sometimes Goodreads tags unintentionally
give away some of the story, so be wary if you get annoyed as I do when it
comes to spoilers. It didn’t say in the blurb if Jillian is mortal or immortal
and I think it's always best to know as little as possible and let the story
unfold. Thankfully, it’s not that big of a deal in the case of Breathing Fire, since you can easily
guess what it’s about with the title.
Breathing Fire is
mainly about Jillian’s adventure when her luck runs out. Along with her older sister
Lynn, they had no choice but to unceasingly run from their past. With it rapidly
catching up to them, it’s up to the women to come across the other side
unscathed. With hilarious situations that somehow has Jillian as the butt of
the joke, sensual passion as well as action packed scenes, this book has everything
that I need in a paranormal romance.
Jillian’s attitude was downright entertaining. Her
recklessness, impulsiveness and paranoia that somehow got her into circumstances
that baffled her and as the reader, I just couldn’t help but laugh. There are
many laugh out loud moments that flowed effortlessly. I absolutely loved the
antics between Christian and Jillian. I could easily see myself befriending the
two.
Rebecca K. Lilley did an amazing job writing the characters;
each one more unique and complex than the next. She did a great job giving the
character enough depth, while leaving the reader’s interest piqued. The one
problem I had was that there was only a superficial background for the
different supernatural beings. There was a good variety of creatures but whom
or what they are wasn't explored enough. For those readers that don’t delve
into this genre much, a solid background is always needed.
The plot was phenomenal and the writing grabbed your
attention and refused to let go. The story was not too dialogue heavy. It was a
great fast paced story, lots of action, delightful supportive characters and
not to forget the variety of paranormal creatures. There was a good balance to
the book; it had a light hearted feel with humour as well as a darker undertone
with Jillian and Lynn’s back-story. I loved this book. It was engaging with a
bad ass heroine and incredible story telling. There was not really a cliff
hanger, yet not everything was resolved, but enough to whet my appetite. There
were of course some unexplained questions. Why were druids so high on the
hierarchy? Where did Jillian go when she disappeared? And plenty others. I
guess I will have to wait and see if the author answers them in the next one.
Did I mention she uses an axe in battle? I imagine it as a
giant, bad ass battle axe, larger than her body. Think Dragon Age Inquisition!
